Conclusion of musical leads actors in return to track

As the musical Cinderella has ended, track season has just begun. Practices have been going on for a few weeks now, yet for cast members of the musical, their track season is just getting started.

Sophomore Mercedes Smartnick played the fairy godmother in Friday and Sunday’s shows. In track she does high jump, triple jump, and discus.

Smartnick says she is ready for track season and is excited to be with all her friends in track again.

“I’m going to take a few days to myself and just rest,” said Smartnick. “Time management has been very stressful because of how much preparation we had the week before the musical. It’s all still hitting me pretty hard.”

Sophomore Joselyn Busato, played Cinderella in Friday and Sunday’s shows. In track, she is a middle distance runner who runs the 1600, 400, 800, 1600 relay, 3200 relay, and triple jump.

Busato says she is excited to run again and says the coaches were understanding of her situation.

“The coaches were kind enough to let me focus on one activity at a time, so things didn’t become too stressful,” said Busato. “Being the lead was a lot of work and pressure, so it was greatly appreciated to be given the opportunity to dedicate all my time to (the musical) until it was over.”

Busato says her experience in the musical has changed her.

“My musical experience was absolutely incredible,” said Busato. “It was honestly life-changing, and I’m so happy I auditioned. I am sad it is over.”

Both Smartnick and Busato have said their motivation lies in performing their best this year in track. Smartnick wishes to beat the high jump record of 5-2, and Busato wants to just do her best.
