‘Color Wars’ meets ‘Hallway Wars’ to boost school spirit

The typically dull, cold, white walls of Southmoreland high school were rapidly given a makeover for Friday Oct. 28―the last football game. Students decorated the hallways with Scottie colors as a part of Spirit Week.

The final day of Spirit Week, which ran from Oct. 24 to Oct. 28 at SHS, was “Color Wars.” Each graduating class was assigned a Scottie color(s) to wear the Friday of the last football game. While this is a traditional part of Spirit Week, this year was different.

“This year’s spirit week was unlike any other we’ve had before,” said senior Haley Rollinson. “Everyone was so involved, especially with decorating the halls, and I was proud to be a part of it.”

Rollinson and other involved Scotties organized “Hallway Wars” in conjunction with “Color Wars” to add a competitive aspect to Spirit Week  and encourage students to show even more school spirit. And it was more successful than they had ever imagined.

The freshmen class was assigned the color white and creepily decorated the math hallway accordingly. The science hallway was transformed into “The Red Dawg Road” by the sophomore class. Juniors blacked out the history hallway complete with black lights and a “selfie station.” The senior class and winners of “Hallway Wars” went “all out” in the English hallway using white, red, black, and more to decorate.

During judging, members of the senior class lined the English hallway and danced along to Southmoreland’s fight song and “Hey” which were being played by senior marching band members. Nate Lockhart also dressed up in his mascot uniform to greet the judges as the Scottie Dog and dance for them.

“I really enjoyed working together with students on something that I adore,” said Mrs. Jenna Hixson, sponsor of the senior hallway, “school spirit.”

Mrs. Hixson shared that friends of hers asked her about “Hallway Wars” after hearing about it via social media. Southmoreland’s student body took to social media proud of their spirited hallways and received many compliments. Southmoreland graduate Andrew Polakovsky commented on the school’s transformation.

“That school got turned upside down,” said Polakovsky. “You guys are making a real difference with school moral whether you realize it or not. We never would have been able to pull something like that off last year.”

Students have expressed their desire to maintain this level of school spirit as the winter sporting events begin. Hallway Wars was successful in rallying students in this year’s spirit week and students “don’t want to see the spirit we built up die out,” Rollinson said.
