Myers becomes 12th wrestler to join 100 wins club

Evan Myers recently became one of 12 wrestlers in Southmoreland history to achieve 100 career wins. He was especially excited to accomplish this since it is his last season as a Southmoreland High School wrestler.

“It takes time and dedication to be successful enough to get 100 wins,” said Myers.

Myers has come a long way since he first started wrestling at the age of 4. In his 14 years of wrestling, Myers has wrestled for Southmoreland as well as the Young Guns Wrestling Club of western Pennsylvania. Wrestling at Young Guns in addition to the high school has helped Myers improve his wrestling skills.

“It’s very disappointing knowing that it’s my last year to wrestle in high school. I know I will miss it,” said Myers. “My coaches have pushed me the most, and I’ll miss them after this year, too.”

Myers biggest motivation came from his coaches and family members who always push him to become a better wrestler. As Myers grew as a wrestler, he became more and more dedicated. He began lifting weights and working harder in the wrestling room than he had before.

Before the match that would result in his 100th win, Myers wasn’t focused on the number of wins. He was focused on simply wrestling his hardest.

“Going into the match, I acted like it was just another match,” said Myers, “But that win was exhilarating.”

Myers is the second wrestler from the Class of 2016 to achieve 100 career wins. Myers’ teammate from the beginning, Jake Beistel, achieved 100 wins last year as a junior. Beistel expressed his happiness for his teammate.

“It’s great and I’m happy for Evan,” said Beistel. “He works really hard in the room and he deserves it.”

Myers is pleased that all of his hard work and dedication has paid off as he achieved his goal of 100 wins. However, Myers still strives to become a better wrestler and set and achieve new goals as his wrestling career continues. These goals include placing high at states and continue his wrestling careers the the college level.
