Students skittish about traveling to France due to recent terror attack
Southmoreland High School has taken students to France and Spain to experience the customs of French and Spanish societies. But due to a rise in world terrorism recently, an opportunity for students to travel to Europe could be tenuous.
Six years ago, French teacher Ms. Victoria Brodak took a group of students in France and Spain so that the students could experience other cultures and the customs firsthand.
“Traveling to France and being able to share the experience with my students was truly a wonderful and memorable opportunity,” Mrs. Brodak said.
Sophomore Ryan Lemmon, a French level three student ,thinks it would be “cool” to have the chance to go on such a trip and be able to see how French and Spanish culture compare to that of America.
“An experience like that has always appealed to me,” said Ritenour. “I would like to go see the Eiffel Tower and other amazing things in France.”
However, ever since the terrorist attack on Nov. 13 in Paris, Mrs. Brodak and several of her French students have expressed their various opinions on whether a trip would be a good idea.
“I still feel the same way about going,” said Ritenour. “But if I had to go now, I wouldn’t because I would want to wait and make sure everything is under control and safe.”
Mrs. Brodak agreed.
“I hope to once again visit France with my students one day,” said Ms. Brodak, “However, in light of the recent attack, I would be reluctant to encourage students to visit France at this time out of concern for their safety.”
