As Southmoreland juniors Morgan Conty and Gracen Kenney stand in the kitchen baking cookies together, the two can’t help but think about the smile that will be on the face of the person who receives their “random act of kindness.”
At the end of Conty and Kenney’s sophomore year, an anonymous individual donated a large supply of cookie ingredients for Southmoreland High School’s club, Random Acts of Kindness for their year-long project, “Boxes of Sunshine.” Together, the duo came up with the idea of making cookies for the boxes of sunshine, and eventually they wanted to make cookies for other people too.
Conty and Kenney created the club called “Cookie Crusaders” to spread kindness to those who need a “pick me up” and to give people in the community a “thank you.”
“Amidst all the hate that is going on in our country right now, seeing a small act of kindness can go a long way,” Conty said. “It’s a nice out-of-the-blue thing and it makes me feel good that people enjoy our cookies.”
Kenney agreed. “We are making a difference one-step at a time. I love helping others and putting a smile on people’s faces,” she said. “We would usually bake cookies at either Morgan’s or my house, but recently, we’ve got permission from the school to bake cookies in the home economics room.”
The club’s sponsor, Mrs. Jenna Hixson, said that she is their “silent partner” and that she leaves the baking to them because “baking isn’t her forte.”
“ I think eating cookies is the perfect way to brighten somebody’s mood because it’s kind and sweet,” Hixson said.
Currently, the club is starting a new project called “The Giving Plate.” The Cookie Crusaders will bake Christmas cookies and deliver them to people.
“We are going to bake cookies, put them on one of these plates, give them to people and, in return, they will pass the plate to someone else to bring joy to them during the holiday season,” Conty said.
“After we graduate in two years, I hope the club will get bigger and continue for future Southmoreland students,” Kenny said of the future of the club.
Conty agrees. “I hope that more people join and I’m really excited to see where this club goes in the future.”
The club meets Wednesdays after-school in Mrs. Hixson’s room.
