Acts of Kindness club helps community

Today, the world isn’t as happy of a place as it used to be, especially in high school where common courtesy isn’t so, well, common. That’s why Mrs. Jenna Hixson, Southmoreland high school English teacher, and assistant principal Mrs. Tawnia St. Amant, created the club Organized Acts of Kindness. OAK has the goal of putting a smile on the faces of others.
Some of the projects the club participates in or plans to participate in are: passing out candy for Halloween, decorating the school, raising money for people in need, volunteering, and much more.
One of their most recent projects is an idea from Pinterest called “Operation Box of Sunshine.” The club members brought in different yellow objects such as: yellow pencils, highlighters, candy with yellow wrappers, etc. They take all these things and put them in a shoe box to give to someone who needs the little extra happiness.
The club had a “Carving and Caring Night” Oct. 27 after the Halloween Parade in Scottdale. These festivities included a bake sale, a pumpkin carving contest, free pumpkin decorating, and autographs from “Disney princesses.”
The goal of the “Carving and Caring Night” was to raise money for a little girl named Sophia who has been in the hospital. The club also made a box of sunshine for both Sophia and her mother.
“Some people may only participate in the Organized Acts of Kindness Club to write on college resumés, but for me, I do it because helping others makes me happy,” said club Justina Fasano.
The Organized Acts of Kindness club is full of students would just want to make other people smile.
