Boys soccer team headed to playoffs for the first time since 2016

Even though the season has been long and tough the Southmoreland High School boys soccer team has managed to advance to playoffs for the 2018 season. The boys are in the WPIAL Class 2A tournament, they haven’t qualified since 2016.   The boys go into playoffs with a record of 8-9.

“I’m very proud of the accomplishments we’ve made as a team throughout the season.” said sophomore captain Jake Vanarsdale. “This year the boys have come together and bonded more as a team and family. We’ve definitely had our bumps in the road, but I’ve always believed we could succeed. Going into playoffs I’m definitely nervous but also excited, because I think we’re well equipped. “

The team lost their final game against Mount Pleasant Area High School, with the final score being 3-0. Despite their loss the team is continuing on the path to playoffs.

“It sucks we lost against our biggest rival but Mount Pleasant is a good team to play to prepare us for playoffs.” said senior Zak Holoman. “If we all play with our heads on straight and communicate and play our ability, we can beat any team that stands in our way.”

The Southmoreland boys soccer team’s first playoff game is against South Park High School. The away game on October 22nd will be held at 6pm at Belle Vernon stadium.

The South Park boys team is 2nd in their section with a record of 11-4-1 for the season. Compared to Southmoreland being 3rd in their section.

“South Park is the favorite” said junior Noah Kinter. “We’ve shown throughout the season that we can compete with the best teams in the WPIAL if we’re on top of our game. We have to come into the game with the right mindset, and then anything can happen.”
