Mt. Pleasant upsets Southmoreland in softball playoffs

Memories flowed through the mind of senior softball player Briana Bunner as her younger sister Bethany went up to bat. “Out!” the umpire called. It was the final out of the game. And the memories ran faster.

“Most of us have been playing together since we were around 10 years old,” said Bunner. “It just hit me that it was our last game together. I saw all the memories of us learning together, playing together, and growing together.”

On May 23, the “close-knit” Southmoreland softball team played Mt. Pleasant in the second round of playoffs at Latrobe’s field. The game resulted in a 9-5 upset for the Vikings who will be moving on to the semifinals. But it was the end for the Scottie “softball family.”

“At the end, I just thought ‘this was the last game with the family that I’ve had since 10-U,’” said junior Olivia Porter. “I really wanted to win for my two sisters that will be leaving, but I have no regrets with this team. Coming this far with them means so much to me.”

Porter was ecstatic to celebrate her homerun in the game against Mt. Pleasant with the team that she grew up with and has instilled confidence in her. The Scotties were trailing 1-7 before Porter’s homer in the bottom of the 5th to bring the Scotties back into the game. Bunner scored after the homer to make the score 7-5, but the momentum came too late in the game.

“Our momentum and everything started to build up that inning,” said Porter. “We just wished it would’ve built up sooner and that we could have maintained the momentum throughout the whole game.”

In the 6th inning, Meadow Uncapher hit a homerun for the Vikings making the score 9-5. The game remained scoreless in the last inning. As the final inning wound down, memories rushed through senior Kylee Wisilosky.

“These girls are my family, and it means so much to me to make it to playoffs with them,” said Wisilosky. “The bond I’ve made with them this year is incomparable to other years. That’s why I think losing hit me so hard, because I know I won’t be beside them next year when they make it back to playoffs.”
