Varsity volleyball players volunteering their time with middle school team

While the typical student goes home and does their homework, hang out with their friends and relax after a long day of school, a couple of girls from the Southmoreland High School volleyball team enjoy spending their free time volunteering with the Southmoreland Middle School volleyball team.
Among the group of girls is sophomore Allison Sherbondy, who has been playing volleyball for the Southmoreland since 7th grade.

Sherbondy said she is “very much involved in the sport.  “It’s so much fun to do, the excitement of playing just gets me rounded up and the feeling of hitting the ball is the best.

According to Sherbondy, “Every aspect of the game makes me fall in love with the sport even more.”
At these practices, the girls help the middle school players get to better know the sport. Sherbondy said she believes the high school players help the middle school players to become better, along with themselves.
Another sophomore, Madison Cowan, also assists down at the middle school practices.
“We want them to realize that we were in the same position as them once so we will help them to get past the obstacles,” said Cowan.
Cowan is more involved this year than in previous years, and from this experience, she sees the eighth graders have “improved a lot.” Yet it seems that the seventh graders are “still grasping the concept of the game.”
“I love the game of volleyball and it gets me more time in the gym,” said Brooke Corley, another one of the girls helping out. “I want to help them improve so that we have a stronger team when they get to the high school.”
Corley has also played volleyball since middle school although she first started practicing with the middle school this year.
“I help them warm up before games,” said Corley. “I even went to one of their tournaments because they only had one coach, so (Sherbondy) and I both went and helped coach.”
Unfortunately, Corley is now busy with track, where she is a pole vaulter, throws javelin and runs in several running events.  But she says that she has seen a “huge improvement” among the middle school girls
“It’s just nice knowing that they can see how high school is and they can learn from me and the other girls,” Corley said.
