Beistel wins, Griffiths loses in state wrestling action
Southmoreland’s Jacob Beistel remains in the hunt for a state gold medal after winning his first bout Thursday.
With the preliminaries and the first round being completed for Southmoreland wrestlers, Beistel looks ahead to his next match at 6 p.m.
Tyler Griffiths, Southmoreland’s other state finalist, was upset 3-2 in his first match. Griffiths lost to Faris Messai of Jamestown.
Both Griffiths and Beistel got byes into their first round.Shortly after Griffiths lost, he was scheduled to be against Colin Leonard of Northern Lebanon. Despite the loss, Griffiths continues in the competition in the losers bracket. Although he can no longer become a state champion, he can still battle back for third place.
On the flip side, Beistel, who was seeded first in his weight class, is currently 1-0. He was bout 161 and won in a fall of 28 seconds to Ian Minnnich of Williams Valley. His next bout number is tonight against Cameron Kates of Northern Lehigh.
