Taking aim at vacation

With his eyes closed Kyle Halleman picks up a dart and shoots it at a map of the United States. Brushing the last bit of his fingers Halleman’s flick of the hand determines where his family will go on vacation.

Halleman’s family has a twist to family vacations compared to most others: his family picks their vacation spot by playing a game of darts. So far, Halleman has traveled to the West Coast, Puerto Rico, British Columbia, Mexico, Canada and New York City.

About a week after school is out for summer, the Halleman family decides where their journey will be. A map is hung on the wall and the dart is thrown; where the dart lands is where their journey will lead to. Parents, Mary and Tim, decided that every family member takes turns with who gets to throw the dart. Not only does the Halleman family go to the specific location, but they make a road trip out of it. Wherever the dart lands, they go – with no questions asked.

“I think it’s unique and pretty cool that I get to take part in the decision,” Halleman said.

Throughout Halleman’s travels he has had many interesting experiences. He has gone shopping in China Town, New York, with his little sister. He also has visited Yellowstone National Park. He was lucky enough to see a huge group of elk crossing not far from him.

Halleman looks forward to the places he’s going to travel in his future, whether it’s a family trip picked by a game of darts or him traveling alone, either will bring great experiences.

“I plan on taking a senior trip to Europe this summer by myself.”

Halleman seems to think that this trip by himself could be challenging but rewarding in many ways.

He just has to take careful aim.
