Snowball Dance to take place

Senior Jenna Roth is more than excited to hear talk of a Snowball dance to take place in January outside of the high school.

“If this works out this will be the best dance I’ve been to all throughout high school,” Roth said. “It’s going to be nice because for once it will be outside of where we eat lunch every day.”

This Snowball dance is practically set in stone for Southmoreland’s January agenda. It has already been approved by administration, and all that is left to do is find the venue and a possible caterer.

“I think it will work out. It will only be about $15 to $25 per person, and it includes dinner,” Roth said. “If you think about it, most people go out to eat afterwards anyway, so why not just eat at the dance and save yourself a few bucks?”

All of the profit to be made will go to the 9th grade class which is sponsored by Ms. Carrie Bisher and Mrs. Kim Kelley.

“I think the Snowball will work out perfectly,” Kelley said. “The only potential issues we have are interest from the students and what we will have to do about severe weather during January.”

Even though weather is mostly “predictable,” the sponsors cannot guarantee that everyone will be make it to the Snowball if there is a bad snowstorm or icy roads.

“In that case we may have to set up some sort of agreement that we can have a back up date if the weather is really bad that night,” said Kelley. “Hopefully whatever venue we choose will be OK with that.”

Earlier in the new school year, students discovered that freshmen will not be allowed to attend the prom. This amendment made many freshmen unhappy, especially those that are dating a junior or senior. This Snowball dance will provide just a glimpse, for the freshmen class, of what prom may be like.

“The Snowball is going to give the freshman the experience of an ‘out of school’ dance,” said Roth. “Since they can’t go to prom, I feel that this will be like their own ‘little prom’.”

However, freshman Shelby Bryant, girlfriend of senior Phillip Lockhart, has a different perspective on this particular subject.

“I still don’t think it is fair that freshmen can’t go to prom this year. Especially when in all of the previous years they could go,” Bryant said disagreeably. “My boyfriend is a senior, and I want to go to prom with him. The Snowball isn’t prom, so it’s not the same.”

Despite this opinion, the talk of the Snowball dance throughout the school is primarily upbeat, and the sponsors hope we can have this dance every year. The student body can hardly wait for this new Southmoreland tradition to begin.
