Southmoreland considers producing first musical

Southmoreland High School has been putting on plays once a year for decades. Cast members and staff spend weeks in preparation for the show, printing out show bills, designing costumes, and learning lines all contribute to the readiness of the play. Although talent and dedication to the play has always been abundant, the attendance from the community is not.

“I’m ready to take Southmoreland High School drama club to a whole new level,” said Michelle Zamperini, director of the school play the past five years.

Ever since Mrs.  Zamperini has been in charge of the school play, she has always considered a musical as an option.

“We’ve always had the talent within the school,” she said. “But we’ve never had the budget or participation necessary to put on such an elaborate show.”

Three years ago, – around the Halloween season – Mrs. Zamperini gathered her show choir members to perform a recently learned dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” For the past three years, about 20 students have met in the commons area of Southmoreland High School to put on a similar “show.” After receiving positive feedback about the performance, a musical seemed like “a wonderful addition to the arts department,” Mrs. Zamperini said.

For the first time in Southmoreland history, a musical production may be on its way. After many years of being shadowed out by other nearby high school, Zamperini is certainty ready to take on the task.

“It will take a lot of time and preparation,” she said. “We will need advertisements, a bigger staff, and community participation to bring a musical to life. If we are able to pull this off, I believe we will finally be in the running against other school.”
