Girls basketball team readies for tonight’s WPIAL title game
Southmoreland’s girls basketball team has played a perfect 24-0 season thus far and the team is heading to its first WPIAL basketball championship game in school history. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. tonight at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh. The Scotties will play against North Catholic (23-1), the reigning three time 4-A WPIAL champions.
“North Catholic is very good, and they are well-coached,” Southmoreland coach Brian Pritts said. “They are sound on both ends of the court. We can’t let the game be bigger than what it is. I know that is tough to say, but we have to keep ourselves in check that it is another game, just like the 24 we have already played this season.”
North Catholic is in the finals for the sixth straight season,, while Southmoreland makes its first WPIAL championship appearance in basketball.
Southmoreland has continued to defy its underdog status, and through their effort and attitude hope to upset number one seeded North Catholic to cap off their historic season.
After tonight, the season continues as the Scotties prepare for the PIAA state tournament and the team’s first ever appearance.
