Southmoreland Legend celebrates 55 years

The 2018-2019 edition of the Southmoreland yearbook will be the 55th volume, and special additions are underway to celebrate this anniversary and milestone .

“We didn’t do anything for the 50th year,” said yearbook adviser Mr. Paul Brittain. “So I’ve decided we will celebrate the 55th year instead.”

This edition will commemorate the joining of the East Huntington and Scottdale school districts in 1964 to form Southmoreland School District. It will include 14 informational pages in the back of the book containing the history of Southmoreland.

“The theme for the 2018-2019 volume is ‘Now and Then,'” said Mr. Brittain. “Classes from throughout the years will put in ads and there will be two special faculty memory pages, as well as the cheerleaders featured in throwback uniforms.”

T-shirts have been printed with the yearbook cover on them for the occasion.

“This is our first commemorative yearbook,” said Mr. Brittain, a 1969 SHS graduate. “The 50th volume didn’t even say that it was the 5oth on it.”

Members of the yearbook staff, headed by editor and senior Cassie Steele, give their time when they are able and attend most Southmoreland athletic and academic events to collect pictures and stories that will represent the school year.

“Yearbooks are a historic reminder of what happened during a school year and represents pride and spirit for our alma mater,” said Mr. Brittain, a retired newspaper editor. “I think it will be a lot of fun for past and present students to look through and relive old memories or learn things we don’t know about Southmoreland.”
