Southmoreland graduate lands Pittsburgh Foundation internship

Southmoreland alumni Keera Frye has begun an internship at The Pittsburgh Foundation, making her  one of the youngest college interns there. The Pittsburgh Foundation is the 12th largest community foundation in the United States and is focused on improving Pittsburgh and surrounding areas.

Frye works on a variety of tasks at the foundation, but has a majority of writing assignments to complete. As of Jan. 21 she has written approximately 200 social media updates that help to promote scholarship funds for the foundation.
Keera is a 2017 Southmoreland graduate and now attends Point Park University in Pittsburgh as a journalism major. While at Southmoreland, Keera was an editor for the online school newspaper the Tam O’ Shanter. When applying for the internship, Frye was required to submit some of her past stories.

“The Tam O’ Shanter was essential for my resume,” she said. “They were impressed that many of my stories were from high school. Being an editor showed that I had the ability to do what was needed. Having Mr. (Chuck) Brittain as a reference greatly helped,” she added.
Frye explained how many people are hesitant to apply for internships such as this one because they are freshman, but she hopes that others can take advantage of opportunities presented to them just as she has.

“If you take advantage of what you have, even if you’re a freshman, you can have as many opportunities as an upperclassman. You just have to go for it,” Frye advised.
Kitty Julian, Senior Communications Officer at the Pittsburgh Foundation, explained Keera’s role at the foundation and said Frye “has been writing fund profiles, which are mini-biographies of the people who have established funds at the Foundation since its inception 76 years ago. She has also been a tremendous asset on social media.”

Julian said Frye’s most recent project “was setting up social media feeds for our affiliate, The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, on Twitter and LinkedIn. She is also working on an article about scholarships for GOAL magazine in Westmoreland County.”
Frye said she will continue her internship and use it and all that she has and will learn to help progress her further into her journalism major.
