‘Red Carpet Affair’ highlights 2017 Southmoreland Prom

The girls grasped onto their date’s arm while they walked across the red carpet and the bright lights blinded their eyes during Southmoreland’s 2017 Grand March.

Southmoreland held its annual prom May 6, with a “red carpet affair” theme. During Grand March, 93 couples walked across the red carpet while paparazzi engulfed them in pictures and stars hung from the ceiling.

The junior class officers included: President, Morgan Conty, Vice President, Gracen Kenney, Treasurer, Allison Sherbondy, Secretary, Hannah Clark, and Historian, Allie Shreffler. They, along with prom committee, were in charge of decorating the stage for grand march, and also planning out prom at the Greensburg Country Club.

Both the class officers and prom committee dedicated a numerous amount of hours and effort preparing for the big day.

“I think grand march went really, really well. The stage looked great, and there were a lot of compliments from crowd members about how much they liked it,” said Conty. “It was a ton of work, but it’s pretty great to see all the prom pictures and realize that prom committee did all that and made it look so nice.”

Although the stage looked beautiful for grand march, the weather outside wasn’t so
beautiful. The rainy, cold weather made it quite difficult for the couples to get pictures and even commute to and from the school.

“It was hard trying to figure out where and when to get pictures because of the weather,” said junior Michaela Burke. “It was hard and upsetting to get pictures because I spent so much time getting ready and I couldn’t even get the pictures I wanted.”

This year the junior class decided to try out a new idea: voting and crowning a prom king and queen; Kacce McKnight was crowned Southmoreland’s 2017 prom queen, and Matthew Huff was crowned Southmoreland’s 2017 prom king.

“Prom king and queen actually turned out really well,” said Conty.

Southmoreland’s 2017 prom turned out to be a very successful night, and many who attended said the event was enjoyable.
