Science teacher/guardsman returning to school after deployment

Chemistry and biology teacher Mr. Sean Cartwright will be welcomed back into the science department of Southmoreland High School on Monday, May 1. Mr. Cartwright has been deployed with the National Guard for about a year and the school is excited to have him back.

“I can’t wait for him to get back,” said Mr. Zack Cavalier, who is also in the science department. “It will be good to see him.”

Students who’ve had Mr. Cartwright in the past are looking forward to catching up with him.

“He’s an easy teacher to learn from,” said Mr. Cartwright’s former student, Abbie Kubasky. “Not only that but he’s funny. While I like (substitute teacher) Mrs. (Sarah) Opalinski, it will be cool to have him back.”

Students enrolled in his classes for the current school year will be having Mr. Cartwright as a teacher for the first time when he comes back to school and have heard nothing but good things from those who have had him before.

“He explained things in a way I was able to understand,” said junior Mia Rocco.

Rocco also recalled when Mr. Cartwright first left on deployment and what that meant for those who were graduating.

“We had a small party, and it was happy but also sad.” said Rocco. “It was a party, but the teacher was leaving, so we weren’t going to be able to see him for a year or, for the seniors, ever again. It was sad.”
