May joins middle school wrestling staff

After taking two years off from coaching the varsity Southmoreland wrestling team, history teacher Michael May has decided to take on an assistant coach position for the middle school team.

“Wrestling has always been part of my life and always will be,”said May.” I’ll always try to give back to the wrestling community and do the best I can.”

May previously wrestled in college at University of Pittsburgh in the 125 and 133 pound weight classes. May looks to take what he knows and use it to help his athletes.

“You have to have the right attitude and methods for the sport since it is individual,” said May.” I want to make it fun for them as well. If you’re not having fun, then what’s the point?”

As for team goals for the season, May says it’s “all up to the wrestlers.”

“Wrestling is a sport with individual goals,” said May.” Once you achieve the personal goals you set, all the team goals will follow.”

The first home match is in December against Frazier.
