Griffiths battles back at states, wins two bouts in triple OT; Beistel continues pursuit of school’s first state championship

Tyler Griffiths and Jacob Beistel continue to compete in the state wrestling championships, as Griffiths won his second and third matches after an opening round loss.
Griffiths completed his match Friday with a 1-0 win in overtime against Austin Clabaugh of Bermudian Springs. He is now set to wrestle Joe Lobeck of Lancaster Catholic in the third round of consolations.
Beistel is still waiting for the start of his quarterfinals match to start against Cameron Kates of Northern Lehigh. That match is slated to begin Friday afternoon.
As day one came to a close for the Southmoreland wrestlers, their focus still remained on their goal to the top of the podium for Beistel, and to place third for Griffiths, who entered the consolation round after a heartbreaking 3-2 loss Thursday.
Beistel remains undefeated as he makes his way into day two after defeating his opponent by a pin of 28 seconds.
“It felt good coming off my first match with a win, that’s a big deal for me,” said Beistel.” It sets me up with a positive mindset for the rest of the tournament.”
Beistel is set to wrestle Cameron Kates of Northern Lehigh in the quarterfinals.
“I’m excited to get back out there on the mat,” said Beistel.
Griffiths is going into day two with a record of 1-1 coming off a win of 7-4 against Colin Leonard of Northern Lebanon. Griffiths fell one point short in his first match as he was upset 3-2.
“It wasn’t the way I wanted to start at all,” said Griffiths.” I have to clear my mind of that first match just like I did for my second.”
The sophomore is set to wrestle Austin Clabaugh of Bermudian Springs Friday as he continues his race for the podium from the consolation bracket.
“Even though I’m 1-1 I still have determination to work my way back up,” said Griffiths.” Now I need to win the next three of my matches to take third place.”
