Southmoreland supports empty bowl event that aids county food bank

The Empty Bowl of Westmoreland County Food Bank is a local event that takes place annually to benefit the community to not only raise awareness for those in need of food, but also be a social event to unite those who are both innovative and caring in southwestern Pennsylvania.

This event, taking place for the 8th time, has always been volunteer driven. For the first time this year, Southmoreland Senior High School is taking part in this benefit by crafting and donating bowls to this association.

“I had no idea before this year that this event was taking place. Had I known, the art council and I would have been involved as much as possible,” said Mrs. Elizabeth Goodman, art teacher.

With about 30 students in the art council, the school will be donating at least 30 bowls to the event.
“Not only are the bowls being donated, but over 30 local restaurants are to be filling those bowls donated with both soup and bread for those who donate money to the cause,” said Mrs. Goodman.

The students taking part in this are fairly familiar with the project, considering they’ve taken Goodman’s previous classes teaching them to make an assortment of bowls in different ceramic methods; being press coil, drape molds, press molds, pinch pot, and other hand built methods.

In previous years, the event has raised over $100,000 for the Westmoreland County Food Bank. This year’s event will be held March 13 at Hempfield High School’s cafeteria. Those who attend that pay a $15 donation to the cause will have a choice of over 1,000 handcrafted bowls, soup from local restaurants, bread from Panera and CWCTC, entertainment throughout the day, as well as other refreshments and food. In addition to the annual schedule, there will be auctions and raffles revolving around other handcrafted ceramics.
