Pollard enjoys implementation of STEM

A lot can change in a time span of 16 years, and that can’t be any more true for Southmoreland STEM teacher Mr. Christopher Pollard. Since 1999, Pollard has been flanked in the TechEd department by Mr. Kintigh and Mr. Yartin, but after this past school year they have since retired.

Because of the retirements, Southmoreland decided to reinvent the TechEd department. The district brought in two new teachers, Mr. Ansell and Mr. Sharek, and renamed the curriculum to STEM.

“It is very exciting,” said Pollard. “There is a lot of new things getting infused into the curriculum.”

Along with the new curriculum, he said he enjoys the company of the new teachers.

“Mr. Sharek brings a lot of fresh, new things into the school, ” Pollard said. “Mr. Ansell also brings a lot to the table, and has some fresh ideas to add as well.”

Mr. Pollard not only has new colleagues to adjust to, but he also made to switch to the graphics room, and is now taking on all of the graphics classes.

“It’s way different, and a lot to get used too.” Pollard said. “It’s also like a brand new start.”

Mr. Pollard enjoys challenge, and is taking it on with a smile.

“I’m not scared to climb the mountain,” he said.

When asked about the future of STEM, Pollard is excited.

“There are so many things you can do, and it’s a huge integrator which it combines multiple subject fields to make a new great product,” said Pollard. “It’s a great opportunity to work together to get a task done.”

In the future, Mr. Pollard hopes to see advanced STEM classes. In the meantime he will spend time in the graphics room washing screens, helping students out, and even giving out the occasional life advice out to students.
