Southmoreland graduates anchor Passion’s championship teams

Winning a Super Bowl is something that every professional football player dreams about. But for Paige Bowman, the most important wins occurred back to back when Pittsburgh Passion won the Independent Women’s Football League World Championship in 2014 and 2015.

“We’ve landed the IWFL World Champion title two years in a row,” said Bowman. “We have the trophies and the rings to back that up.”

Bowman, a 2014 Southmoreland graduate, said that when she stepped onto the field for the championship game, “so much went through my mind. I knew that it was going to be the best game I have ever played, and I kept that mindset for the rest of the game.”

In 2014, Bowman’s first year with the team, the championship game was held in Rock Hill, South Carolina against the Houston Energy. The final score was 41-7 Pittsburgh.

In 2015, the Passion faced the Utah Falconz and won 41-37.

“There are several ingredients needed in order to be a successful team,” said Teresa Conn, owner and head coach of The Pittsburgh Passion. “They include respect, loyalty, sacrifice, and integrity.”

The Pittsburgh Passion’s motto is “teaching life lessons through sports.”

Bowman’s cousin, Shelby Horak (2010 graduate of Southmoreland), is the center for the Pittsburgh Passion.

“I see myself as the leader of the line,” said Horak. “I am the one making the calls at the line and in the huddle.”

Horak can remember playing football with her neighbors growing up, and she even participated in the powder puff game every year in high school.

“It’s an amazing experience to play for Passion,” said Horak. “It is hard work, but has taught me a lot about responsibility, respect, trust, and much more.”

After this season, Horak said she plans on moving in order to get a zoology degree.

“I plan on being able to play football,” Horak said, although it may “be with a different team.”

Bowman, however, plans on staying with the Passion.

“The team isn’t just a team,” said Bowman. “It’s a sisterhood.”
