Carson flourishes at vo-tech school

Ever since Kayla Carson was young, she had an interest in doing others’ hair. She would always want to practice on people, even if it was something as simple as braiding their hair. As Carson began to get older, her interest and enthusiasm for cosmetology had further began to blossom
Carson is both a sophomore at Southmoreland High School and a first year student at CWCTC (Central Westmoreland Career and Technology), otherwise known as tech. It’s an out of high school experience where students can practice and pursue a variety of interests to one day transform into a career.
Only being in tech for a couple of months since the beginning of the school year, Carson is already starting to flourish in the field of cosmetology. A prime example of her talent is when she won first place in an up-do contest that was held the night of the school’sĀ open house.
When Carson learned about the contest, she said she was unsure what she could do to try to win. The one thing she knew was that she wanted to add curl to the hairstyle. Without much to go off on, Carson just “went with the flow” while she worked on her mannequin’s hair. After days of practice, Carson finally perfected the look that won her first place.
“Of course I went into the competition with confidence, but I never expected to actually win,” said Carson.
Much of a pleasant surprise to her, Carson’s win shows her dedication and boosted her skills along with her confidence.
“Tech is a really good opportunity for those who are interested in pursuing something they’re passionate about. You can walk out of high school and go straight into the work field,’ she said. “I’ve always known that a simple desk job would never suit me and because of this opportunity, I have a good idea of what my future holds.”
