Students pack schedules with school activities, work and studies

Morgan Conty, a sophomore at Southmoreland, is involved in many after school activities including cheerleading, marching band, YEA, OAK, French club, student council, and is an active volunteer of Reading Buddies. On top of all of that, she is the vice president of her class.

“It’s definitely not easy having a lot of hard classes plus doing other outside activities,” said Conty.  “But without doing band, cheer and other volunteering activities, I wouldn’t really have anything to take my mind off of school and de-stress.”

Conty feels that excessive homework is “unnecessary.”

“After you’re already taken so many hard classes, having hours upon hours of homework gets to be overwhelming,” said Conty.

With school being Conty’s “number one priority,” she always makes sure to get her work done as soon as she gets home.

“I honestly love seeing the little kids’ faces in the primary center when we high school students go down there and read to them,” said Conty.  “They love it so much and it’s just so fun to go there and make their day.”

Mark Farmer, a sophomore, is on the football, basketball, and baseball teams.

“On days we have away games I usually don’t get home until around midnight,” said Farmer.

Farmer feels that it is “difficult” to deal with school and sports, especially since his sports are basically all year round.

“I do my homework after my practices, and although it’s difficult, I’ve learned to budget my time,” said Farmer.

Kaylee Brosius, junior, is a part of the high school tennis team, part of student council, vice president of French club, an OAK member, and also volunteers for Reading Buddies.

Brosius feels that “homework every now and then is necessary” because it helps show improvements in the classroom.

“Even though it’s a positive addition to our educational success, the amount of homework is sometimes excessive,” said Brosius.

For Brosius, things get difficult dealing with tennis during the season and while being active in after school activities.

“There’s not enough time in the day to do everything I want and need to do,” said Brosius, adding,  “while getting the correct amount of hours of sleep at night.”

Spencer Montgomery, a senior, is a part of the high school basketball team. The basketball team has either a game or practice six days a week.

“During the season, school gets a little tougher, but I’ve always found a way to get my work done,” said Montgomery.  “Being on the basketball team over the past three years, at times homework got to be excessive, but I managed to get through it.”
