Once a month

Every year, seniors who are in YEA get a chance to go to get out of school for a day, pick a teacher and experience the teaching ways in our other three schools. Brooke Cottom, a senior picked Mr. Riccuitti the art teacher.

She absolutely loved it.

“I learned how to make stain glass, dream catchers, 3D letters, and rain sticks.” said Cottom. Brooke also loved interacting with the kids.

“It had definitely opened my eyes more to what being a teacher is like,” she said.

A select few of year members get their choice to pick any of the teachers from the Middle, Elementary and Primary schools. They help the teacher in any way that they can. They help by grading papers, help demonstrate examples in art and participate in gym class.

“I loved once a month, “said Emily Roth, a senior, “It was a great experience. I graded papers and projects and helped Mrs. Stacie Weaver, middle school science teacher organize her stuff. When Emily was in middle school, she would always help her grade things.

“I think I will appreciate what teachers do a whole lot more,” Roth said, “A teacher’s job is not as easy as it looks. It’s much more complex from making lesson plans and tests.”

Brittney Leonard, a senior Mr. Nicholson, a science teacher at the middle school. She really enjoyed doing once a month. It was “cool” seeing school from the teacher perspective.

Leonard helped the students do their activity on the computer. She hung up pictures for the history teachers and did whatever was needed for her teacher. “It was interesting seeing all of the younger kids from Southmoreland,” she said.

“I love once a month because I saw school as a teacher and not a student,” Leonard continued, “It was fun seeing all my (former) teachers.

Participating in this insightful program will surely help you decide on your major.

Leonard said, “I hope this program helps me truly decide on my major.
