Homecoming Dance

2013 graduate, Kiana Craft arrived at the 2013 Homecoming dance in a limo with the rest of the 2013 Southmoreland High School Homecoming Court. At the dance, the whole court was announced. This year, the Homecoming Dance didn’t even take place until nearly 4 whole weeks after the Homecoming Queen, Trisha Bungard, was announced at the October 3rd football game.

“We wanted all athletes to be able to attend,” said Mrs. Nikki Lewandoski who is in charge of planning the dance with the SHS cheer squad, “so we held it after all their seasons were over.”

One of the members of the 2014 Homecoming Court, Emily Donovan, recalled that her freshman year one of the girls on the court, Amanda Collins, was unable to attend the dance. The dance was scheduled the same night as a girls soccer game and, “it was a home game, which was a like slap in the face,” said Donovan.

Donovan did not attend this year’s dance even though it wasn’t scheduled on the night of a game. While the other six members of the Homecoming Court were having fun at the dance, Donovan was at work.

“The dance was a lot of fun,” said Bungard, “I had such a great time with everyone.”

Members of the Homecoming Court in attendance had a good experience at the dance, but some of them wish the dance would’ve done something special for the court like in past years.

“It was just a dance,” said another member of the court Taylor Millslagle, “with the word ‘homecoming’ in the name.”

The Homecoming Dance has decreased in how much it is centered around the Homecoming Court, but Southmoreland is lucky to have a homecoming dance at all.

Before Mrs. Lewandoski took over as the SHS cheerleading coach, no one sponsored the dance. If it were not for Mrs. Lewandoski’s willingness to plan this event, Southmoreland would be without a homecoming dance like it was three years ago.
