Teacher seeks help for Cross Country Team

Mr. Zack Cavalier, a science teacher and assistant coach for cross country and track, was in the hallways asking for anyone to help the cross country team. With only about 10 runners on the boys and girls teams combined, the program needed help.

Austin Bixler, a senior at Southmoreland, gave it a thought when Mr. Cavalier approached him and he said that he would give it a try. Bixler understands that he is running against people who have run for a couple years. He said that if he gets anywhere close to placing at a meet, “It’s a bonus.”

Sport teams at Southmoreland Senior High School aren’t looking good for players again this year. Since all of the seniors that graduate will be unable to play for high school teams, the numbers of sports players will go down increasingly. The football team has more than ten seniors and senior Katrina Lauffer is tired of sports teams not having enough players.

“Having not enough players makes me upset, not a lot of players on a team means that there’s less breaks for the people that are playing the game,” said Lauffer, “So you have to play longer.”

Cross country numbers were low until six seniors came out to help. As the team was in need of runners, Mr. Cavalier, a science teacher and also a track coach, was in the hallways asking for anyone to help the team. Austin Bixler, a senior at Southmoreland, gave it a thought when Mr. Cavalier. approached him and he said that he would give it a thought. Bixler understands that he is running against people that have ran for a good couple of years. He said that if he gets anywhere close to that, it’s a bonus.

With many seniors graduating, the sports teams are just going to get smaller and smaller if nobody joins. School spirit is more than just wearing red and black to school, it’s about being involved and participating in extracurricular activities. Lauffer hopes that when she graduates there will still be enough players on her team. School sports need more players and more people to join to keep the sports alive in Southmoreland.
